The Most 80's Thing You'll Ever Hear Today Is This ThunderCats/ALF Fan Theory On Reddit That Actually Makes So Much Sense!

Sometimes, fan theories turn out to be so much better than a show’s original plotline. They are usually carefully plotted, featuring clinical precision in terms of continuity and lore. Though, of course, some are just downright hilarious. ALF and ThunderCats are both famous shows from the '80s, but looking back now, they had ridiculous plotlines. Surprisingly, people still dedicate hours of their lives trying to devise an unlikely link between the two shows. Brilliant? Ridiculous? That’s a big “yes” to both. 

For those who don't know, ThunderCats is an animated series that revolves around cat-like humanoid characters who were forced to escape their homeworld, Thundera, in search of “Third Earth.” Upon arrival, the survivors continue their fight against their age-old enemies: the Mutants of Plun-Darr and the sorcerer Mumm-Ra. ALF, meanwhile, is a live-action sitcom about an alien with a sarcastic personality and a weird craving for cats. He accidentally crashes into the garage of a human family, far away from his home planet, Melmac. 

As different as the two shows may seem, a fan theory posted on Reddit tells a tale that connects them in such a way that it could be the real deal. The theory suggests that ALF came from a species that isn’t just sarcastically lovable but is also responsible for the terror that engulfed Thundera. The theory suggests that this Melmacian-sparked war gave birth to the terror that is Mumm-Ra.

To cut a long story short, the theory details the Kingdom of Melmac and their space-faring soldiers who were sent to planets other than Earth, including Thundera. The Melmacians knew the population of Thundera was a ready food source.

Everyone who watched the show knows that Gordon Shumway (ALF’s real name, with ALF standing for Alien Life Form) loved dining on cats. So, it only makes sense that his species would want to harvest from a planet full of cat beings. If that were the case, it would have been a bad experience for the Thunderians, and their extinction would have been a near certainty. 

The theory goes on to suggest that the few surviving Thunderian would attempt to rebuild their society. However, it would be divided into two factions: traditional and progressive. The traditional Thundarians would want to return Thundera to its pre-invasion glory, practicing magic and mysticism once again. The progressive faction would be interested in using their enemy's advanced technology to rebuild society and avoid having the same thing happen again. 

Of course, the ThunderCats would be on the progressive side, while Mumm-Ra and his team would be of the traditional, conservative faction.

In conclusion, Melmacians and their appetite for felines triggered a galactic conflict thanks to their insatiable appetite for cats. 

This TV-related theory might seem silly, but if you dissect it properly, the shows could be very well connected. The seemingly innocent and lovable ALF could have once been death (to felines), destroyer of worlds. 

In the Season 1 finale, ALF tries to persuade the US government to stop using nuclear weapons because his race nearly destroyed itself through its warring tendencies. While it might seem impossible for ALF, in particular, to be the destroyer of worlds, Melmac had enough weaponry to demolish an entire society.

If you haven't noticed, Thundera doesn't have an overwhelming number of inhabitants. It might be an indication that the rest died for some unknown reason. And that reason could be the Melmacian attacks. If not, what happened to the other inhabitants of Thundera?

There isn't any viable reason why the planet would be so sparsely populated. Not until you consider the possibility of an invasion from a race that sees Thunderians as nothing more than meat. It's not that hard to imagine. Melmacians do, after all, love felines, and Thunderians are indeed cats. 

There's a big hole in this theory: if you’ve watched the show, you'll know that ALF's probe doesn't use the most cutting-edge technology. The only thing that's shocking about ALF's technology is the fact that it could achieve interplanetary travel in the first place. To consider it as a technology that could rival the magic of the ThunderCats? We don't think so. 

This theory is fascinating and ridiculous at the same time. It could have been a great link if only that gaping hole in its logic doesn't exist. In truth, we would love to discover that the link is real and that the show’s creators kept it hidden all this time.
